Solving MBACET Verbal like a Pro !!!

Note: Had a tough day? Like some humor?: Read the entire post.                                                                                                        No time? Want me to get to the point?: Read the stuff between lines

It started in the month of July, The year was 2018. The witch called CAT verbal ability section, marched towards the army of my mental capabilities, in order to defeat me, in an area which I felt was my forte in school. The early encounters were exhausting and frustrating for ME. I was trying to know her. The weapons she held, her ability to keep me always on my feets, and those beautiful but deceptive eyes...enough to captivate a man into the cage of frustration.

Ok, this is a blog about CET prep, enough show of my writing skills...let's get to the point. Right away:

Background: I was good at English, as a subject in school. I read a good amount of material in my formative years. Quora is a platform that I visited a lot, but that just enhanced my reading speed, especially on a computer screen. Then, engineering happened and my connection with English was only restricted to the boundaries of electronics subject matter.

My preparation for CAT, required me to read lots of RCs, which involved difficult to understand words and sentence structures. This made MBACET verbal section pretty easy for me.

Ok, but what if YOU do not have this level of exposure? -No worries, there are ways in which you too can excel at the verbal section. This one is going to be a long one, fasten your seatbelts.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

My way of solving the verbal section in MBA CET:

As mentioned in the previous blog, I used to solve the section in the extreme end. The time allotted was 20-27 minutes. The key was to visit each and every question and take a calculated guess, mark the answer and move ahead.

We all have an intuition, right? One option attracts us more than the others. It sounds grammatically correct, you have read something similar somewhere, your gut feeling says, mark C. Mark it and move ahead.

THE GRAMMAR AND VOCABULARY PART:

I have seen people, studying complex grammar rules, Working on complex vocab, Let me tell you why I do not believe in these methods.

There are Gazzilion grammar rules, by rules I mean, studying sentence structures, noun+verb+object, not only but also usage, etc. It's good to have a glance at these concepts, but when you solve questions all you have is 45 seconds,

Just don't sit there, remembering a rule and then apply it to get the answer. You don't have time for that. What ultimately will work for you there, is your gut feeling, your intuition.

People tell me that, they are working on vocabulary from books like, word power made easy. My response is a big No-no. Cet vocab requirement is basic, also you don't have the time to complete such books, they require 6 months on an average, you have like 4 months for entire CET prep.

RCs, PARAJUMBLEs AND EVERY OTHER ASPECT:

Parajumbles are LOVE. Reasons:

  • Less investment and you have 5 marks in your pocket.
  • There is room for error as well, didn't get the first sentence right? don't worry there are other 4 sentences, that can fetch you marks.
  • The time required is less, once you have decided on a sequence, just ski away marking 5 precious answers, like a boss. On your face, Puzzles.
RCs are insurance policies:

  • I personally, never found the time to solve Rcs, provided every other aspect in the question paper was doable. However, there can be times when, Puzzles are exceedingly tough. That Di set is a tough nut to crack. What do you do? a)Sit and Cry b)Invest that time and get yourself an insurance reward.
  • There are two ways of solving an RC:
    • The KetanKG way
      1. Read the starting and ending 4 words of each paragraph of the RC
      2. Try to gauge the gist of the RC. Answer these questions in your mind: What is the RC about? Ok, Women drivers. Is he speaking positively or negatively? sometimes +vely sometimes -vely.
      3. Spot some proper nouns, Organization names, people names etc.
      4. This entire exercise can take half of your available time, given that now we have to read and answer questions.
      5. Read the question, Do NOT return to the RC, unless its a factual question. Answer it based on guessing. Move ahead. Run
    • The Blind Ninja way
      1. There can be times where you cannot afford to read the RCYou barely have the time to read and answer questions. Familiar? I am sure yes.
      2. What do you do?
      3. Read the question, read the options. Mark the answer by taking a guess.
      4. This guess should just be able to eliminate bizarre options.
      5. Example: What does the author think about women drivers?
        1. a) "Random something"
        2. b) "Something else random"
        3. c) Cows hate car drivers             This is where your alarms should ring
        4. d) Gender has nothing to do with driving skills.    Ahh, Balanced view !
      6. Eliminate options with c in it, look for ones with d. Mark your answer, never look back again.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

How do you get better at Verbal ability, in general? : Read, read and read. As much as you can. Grab every opportunity to read. It will help you learn new words and more importantly, as far as CET is concerned, it will help you, grasp sentence structure and develop that intuition. The intuition that tells you that, this is correct because this sounds right in my head.

If you have more doubts, please post in the comments. More posts in few days. Sorry for that huge Gap. Until next time.
